Himdent Foundation organised Dental Health Camp at JHS & GPS Gagardhar, Ukhimath, Rudraprayag
Date: 16th to 18th December 2024
Sponsored by Smile For All
We are happy to share the success story of our dental camp under the Smiling Schools programme. The camp was sponsored by Smile For All. The camp held at JHS & GPS Gagardhar on the serene hills of Ukhimath, Rudraprayag was a perfect blend of service, dedication and impact.
The Journey
The journey to Gagardhar was both challenging and rewarding. After a ten-hour bus journey from Dehradun, our team reached Gwar village, where we were scheduled to stay for the next three days. The climb to reach the school located half a kilometre up the road added to the excitement of our mission.
Our Team and Volunteers
The camp was made even stronger by the presence of two dedicated and experienced volunteer doctors, Dr. Dhiraj Mukherjee (West Bengal) and Dr. Areeb Deshmukh (Maharashtra). Their expertise and commitment played a vital role in providing high-quality dental care during the camp.
During the dental examination, it was alarming to find that 95% of the school children had some kind of dental problem, highlighting the urgent need for dental care and awareness in such remote areas.
Day 1: Orientation and Awareness
On the first day, we started with an engaging orientation session led by our doctors. The session included interactive discussions on the importance of dental hygiene, proper brushing techniques, and how oral health affects overall health.
Day 2 and 3: Dental Examination and Treatment
The next two days were focused on providing treatment. We performed 53 permanent fillings in 29 children. The school staff also received scaling treatments, and we are confident that the children will now be able to eat properly with the teeth that have been filled.
Overcoming Challenges
The remote location and the arduous climb posed logistical challenges, but the determination of our team and the warm hospitality of the school staff kept our spirits high.During the dental check-up, it was alarming to find that 95% of the school children had some kind of dental problem, highlighting the urgent need for dental care and awareness in such remote areas.Special thanks to our volunteer doctors, Dr. Mukherjee and Dr. Deshmukh, whose selfless service played a vital role in the success of the camp.
Looking Ahead
The success of this camp has fuelled our passion to expand the Smiling Schools programme to more schools in remote areas. And this passion is further strengthened when doctors like Dr. Dhiraj Mukherjee and Dr. Areeb Deshmukh choose to come to these mountains to offer their services and contribute selflessly.
